prop nut torque??

any one know what the proper torque specs are for the prop nut on a 79 rude 140 the clymer shop manuel says to torque the prop nut to 50 ft lbs, this does not sound right to me,theres a what looks like a fiber washer behind the nut,does not look like it could stand 50 lb of torque,does any one know what the proper torque is for the prop?? don't want to lose the prop or damage the lower unit..

My '02 90 hp Merc manual says 55 ft-lbs. On a bare shaft there is first a bronze thrust washer, then the prop with rubber hub, then a 6 prong ss locking ring, and then the nut with plastic locking insert on the rear.

Don't know about OMC, but the idea is that you don't want the prop loose on there as in no time, it will wear out the interface on the prop (bronze) which is against the ss shaft. Besides it would clunk every time you shifted gears.

That sounds about right at 50 ftlb. I change props on my motor all the time, I've never accually torqued mine but I know I get at least 50 ftlb on it.

I found the torque specs on the prop nut,manuel is wrong.. for those who may need the specs you tighten the nut as tight as you can get it BY HAND, NO TOOLS, then install cottor pin. but first grease the spline and shaft.. and these specs are for the older 1979 evinrude crossflows..
