Prop Opinion?

I have a 2007 Sea Pro 195 Fish & Ski with a 150 Verado and (its broke in now) yesterday I gave it the full shake down. I am slightly under propped using a 17p Mercury Mirage Plus. At full trim I can easily hit over 6400 rpms. Max rpms for this motor is 5800-6400. I considered changing to a 18p until yesterday when I pulled a couple of skiers. I am experiencing a decent amount of blow out when making sharp turns to recover a downed skier. I can also get som blow out on hard acceleration when going straight. I am thinking that I could lower the engine on the transom on hole and that should possibly stop the blow out problem. This should lower the rpms also, right? I need to get a spare prop so I am going to wait and see if I can stop the blow out problem first before I consider buying a spare. Opinions on my thoughts? Thanks.

Re: Prop Opinion?

If your prop is too small in diameter, it is one possible reason for blowout.

Re: Prop Opinion?

If your outboard is mounted correctly then a 4 blade prop would help to reduce blowout. There are posts on here where you can find the proper mounting height.

Re: Prop Opinion?

Well I lowered the motor one hole on the transom and got a little traction. Then I also got some real #s. At 6800 (yes 6800) rpms I was running 45 mph. So I paid my dealer a visit yesterday and swapped out for a 21 pitch Laser II. Hopefully it should put me in the 6000 rpm range. I am also going to probably get a 19 pitch (possibly a 4 blade) as a spare depending on how this 21 performs.

Re: Prop Opinion?

Have you considered an Enertia?

I know they are expensive, but may be a good choice for you...

The Merc Prop Calculator is suggesting 21", 6,100 rpm's and about 52 MPH - Check it out.

Re: Prop Opinion?

The Laser II produced 6000 rpms and I am guessing around 52 mph. I am going to use a 4 blade 18 pitch Alpha for a spare. I wish I had gone with a 19 pitch Laser II. I may sell 21 in favor of a 19. Enertia is out of my price range.

Re: Prop Opinion?

I just picked up a 19p Mercury Vengence 3 blade tonight on e-Bay. I believe the 19 is gonna be a better choice for the primary prop. I may sell the Laser II at a later date.

Re: Prop Opinion?

Installed the 19P Vengeance and gave it a 105 mile run on the ICW this passed Saturday and I am pleased. I have a 21P Laser II I need to get rid of now.
