Hi all, background info: 1993 Party Hut with Evinrude Tracker Pro 115 outboard with spun hub. Hub was replaced several days ago, and looks great. Went to put it on the outboard today, and the prop nut wouldn't go on the shaft. Apparently the threads on it are stripped or damaged.

I'm about ready to sell the damn thing. How much is THIS going to cost in blood or treasure?

Nut the correct size?
Will it go on if you turn it around?
See any damaged threads on the shaft? If so, you should be able to "chase" them with a die, and clean them up.
If not, then the threads in the nut must be damaged, just replace it.

The nut came off, right? So how did threads get damaged since then?

It will be ok.

Don't let anyone talk you into tearing down the gearcase and replacing the prop shaft.

Hi Roscoe,
Yep- it's a really long story, but yes- nut came off, but we had a stuck propeller that had been on the boat for 23 years. A friend that knows more about boats than me was trying to help loosen it by using a mallet on the nut. That damaged the nut as well as the threads right at the top of the shaft.

I'm not familiar with how to chase the threads with a die- can you explain?

Oh- and got a brand new nut from U.S. Propeller that had re-hub bed the prop for me. It looks exactly like the nut I had originally...

The shaft is probably mushroomed and threads perhaps damaged. You may be able to use a file to clean up the end.
You may have to clean it up to get then thread chaser started.Examine the threads you may actually be able spot the
damaged threads.

Lol...thanks Bondo- repair place kept the old one, and I just didn't know that it was a 5/8 x 11 threads per inch. Thanks though!
Got it fixed and on the boat- thanks everyone!!!! Lessons learned for SURE! We'll be on the lake tomorrow (assuming I get the wasps killed).
Happy weekend!!!
