Prop Question - Flaw I think

I have a chance to get a new...used prop. It is almost flawless, but I did notice at the end (outside portion) it isn't flared like my other props. It looks as if there was a ring portion on it and now it isn't there as if it was knocked off or if has fallen off. I don't have a picture to show yet, and I hope I am explaining this well. It is the portion of the prop close to the nut/bolt. If I am not explaining well let me know and I will try to get a picture of it tomorrow to show you.

Some barrels are straight, some flared and some have a defuser ring on the end. Knowing what brand & model prop it is would be helpful.

Re: Prop Question - Flaw I think

Thanks Dhadley, I will try to find out what brand it is. It fit my 115 Mariner. It has a ring around the end as if one was there or one could be put on it. The prop isn't damaged at all, it just looks odd compared to my other prop.....it almost looks shorter, like it should have the flare end portion. My question I guess was does anyone think this would/could cause any damage to using? I guess my main reason for asking is, the prop is almost free to me, but just because its cheap doesn't mean its a good buy if it could cause damage using it or if it wont work properly. Thanks

No harm will come from running the prop without the flare but you might experience a loss in performance. I do have one or two old mercury bronze props with straight hubs. I also have a Michigan demo prop with the flare replaced with a plain chrome ring. The flare does help in low end. and exhaust scavenging. Some Michigan props do have a press-on flare so if it is missing and if it is Michigan, they may be able to help you.

I bought a used prop last year that was missing its diffuser ring. Was able to locate a NOS ring elsewhere and install it. If it is designed to have a diffuser ring, I believe its performance will suffer without one.

Thanks for the help guys....I am going to look into buying that ring for the prop. Like I said I am getting this prop for a very good cost(25.00), does anyone know how this ring is attached...welded or is it held on by pressure? Also what is the cost of this ring.

You need to identify the prop. Each prop is different. Some you can easily find a diffuser ring for, others not so easy.

Part number and a pic would help a lot.
