Prop Question: How do I know which one I need?

Hello,

As stated in another thread I tore my boat up real nice my first trip out on the lake, including pretty much trashing my prop. The local shop wants 70.00 to repair it or 135.00 for a new one, but I've seen them for 50.00 or so online. My question is, how do I know which ones will and will not fit?

How do I find out my pitch? Can I use a different pitch?

There is a certain prop that I'm looking at that comes off of a 1978 70 HP evinrude. My motor is a 1977 70 HP evinrude. There is another prop that says it fits various johnsons and evinrudes between 70-140 HP and that it is "splined".

Is the dealer the only one that can tell me which ones will and will not work?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Mike,

More than likely, your engine takes a 13 1/4" X 17" or a 13 1/4 X 15". Without knowing your load, or how the engine tach's out, we're all guessing.

Mike,What it means is that you or your dealer need a means of determining which prop will allow your motor on a given load to run between 5500-6000 rpm at wide open throttle. If your motor is not equipped with a tachometer to determine this ,even your dealer is guessing on a prop pitch that will be optimal for your boat and motor. You will find that a tachometer is an integral instrument to have aboard in monitoring engine performance.

Why not find out what your old prop was? It'll be stamped with the size and pitch (and part number). If you were happy with the performance before, then you can buy/order the same one. If ebayin' or such, ask the vendor the size & pitch, (and part #) to make sure it's the one you're looking for. BTW, $70 for repair doesn't seem bad if the $50 for buying a used one doesn't include shipping, and if there's any doubt whether you're getting what you want.

Brent
