Re: Prop question (I think....) 211 Liberator

Just went through thebsame problem in a 1984 wellcraft bowrider with new 260. Hit 3900 rpms. I had a couple issues but the biggest was a clogged flame arrestor. I soaked mine in carb cleaner and blew it out w compressor and good to go. Try going wot with it off. I also had to adjust spring for secondaries but mine was new carb. Hope this helps

Thanks, I cleaned the flame arrestor but I have not messed with any of the secondaries, I am not really sure how to even adjust them.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this bad vacuum line is my problem. But that is about all I get, 3900-4000. I have done alot in the past couple days to it, hopefully tonight I cad get it all back together and try it out!

Thats where it idled at before I adjusted the timing, I highly doubt the previous owner did anything to it other than do things to make my life harder...lol

Does the idle adjustment screw adjust the linkage or is it air/fuel adjustment?

The idle speed adjustment just adjusts how far the throttle plates will close/open at idle. you can see the throttle move when you adjust it. Don't mess with the idle mixture screws, there are two of them on the front..

Alright...

Boat is back together and took it out for a ride last night. Can hear the secondaries opening now, and maybe hit 41-4200...Wasn't paying much attention to speed as it was dark and just wanted to go for a ride...So here is where I am now...

Old Prop 14.25x21 SS
Test prop 14.5x19 Alum

Before-with 21p, 1/4 tank of gas, 3900-4000 RPM, 44mph

Since then- New Fuel line, check valve, filter in carb, water/fuel separater, plugs, wires, cap/rotor, set timing to 8-9 BTDC, flushed out the flame arrestor, 30 gallons more fuel, new vacuum line, made sure Throttle FULLY opens.

14.5x19 Alum I get 4200-4200 RPM, Sorry unsure of speed.

I am picking up a new SS Michigan wheel Apollo, 14.125x19 today.

Side note, While checking timing, the timing mark is pretty consistent, but about every 10 seconds or so, the line jumps roughly 8 degrees.

I do not have anything to readily test my compression, so that will be last on my list of things to do unfortunately.

Thats the issue if its at idle....Delco est is a very good answer

You're saying the TBIV is restricting me? IT advances roughly 28-30 degrees after 2500 RPMS...?

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but your WOT rpm range is 4200-4600. You'd want it to be closer to 4600 with a light load in the boat.

Pre '89 libs hit 52 MPH with a 260 (230 propshaft)? Seems like a stretch to me, but I haven't seen the data. Just for a point of reference, today's MPI 4.3s are there in power and lighter, and no one would be unhappy with 48 MPH. Have we verified the gear ratio? Do we know the tach is right? My contributions to almost every prop thread :)

Am i missing something..any dist that jumps 8 degree's at idle is not what you want....what if it jumped at WOT....Boom boom time.

Re: Prop question (I think....) 211 Liberator

Well, this weekend, I bought a Michigan Works, 14x19 Pitch...new so I know it hasn't been altered.

I was able to hit my 4500 mark...

GPS was 48 against the current, 51 with the current.

Could have been the vacuum line for the secondaries, I noticed before we went out that there that I may have cut it a bit long and was a slight bend in it that was causing it to kink. I think I need to order some, the stuff autozone sold me was Vaccum/wash fluid line? def not as thick as the original.

Also not sure what was causing the slight miss when I was doing the timing, but seems to be ok now. Maybe bad gas?

For the first time I ran it to well below 1/4 tank, so maybe 4-5 gallons left? Then filled it back up. Who knows what it went through with the previous owner..
