Prop Question

I've got a 74 Eska 5 HP

The motor's pretty slow & barely gets my boat on plane with a lot of weight forward.

Will changing to a 3 blade prop help speed it up a bit?

The old props worn & ragged so I need to replace it anyway.

Thanks Lee

Re: Prop Question

If you looked at a race boat you'd likely find a two blade prop. More blades does not necessarily increase speed. To determine if a different prop will help, you need a baseline of data. The correct prop is one that allows the engine to run in the manufacturers wide open throttle rpm band. Speed is what you get when you have a prop that achieves that rpm. Since you don't have a tach and you didn't give us current diameter and pitch numbers, we really can't help. But I will stick my neck out and say a three blade will likely not help. You are dealing with 5 HP here. It takes more pitch to increase speed and it takes more power to spin a prop with more pitch. Power you don't have.

Re: Prop Question

Just realize that most 5hp won't get much of anything on plane.

Re: Prop Question

Something to chew on. Once the boat is on plane, does she move along pretty well? If so, less pitch will likely help her out of the hole. I love stories so here's a short one, when I turned 7 my parents gave me a 1989 2hp Evinrude. I could get my 12' aluminum up on plane with that. Let's not forget I wasnt more than 75 lbs then, but anything's possible.

RNDN, in regards to our treasure stories (posting-Fun for the Family), my sister and I would use that skiff to find new beaches to beach comb. :)

Your not likely to find any prop choices but::
definately get a new prop or see if a prop shop can repair yours.
It should help your performance some. Also you could raise the motor vertically.until just before ventilation becomes a problem.Just add 1/4 inch sticks on top of the transom.Should help hole shot and top speed.Probably not much on that little motor but a couple of hundred rpm could mean planing or not.just be sure it continues to pump water and the clamps have a good grip.
