Prop Question

Hi There,

I attempted to do some underwater landscaping and dinged up the aluminum prop on my Alpha 1 pretty badly. I was given another prop whith some boating stuff a guy was getting rid of, but it is not the same size and pitch.

Can you help me understand the implications of changing to a different prop size ? Do I lose speed, torque either or depending on which way I go with prop size.

The undamage prop is a larger diameter, I am not sure on the pitch.

Thanks in advance,

jon

Re: Prop Question

You need to have whatever prop gets you to your specified WOT....
Generally, a decrease in pitch will give you a better hole shot with less top end.....
A larger diameter will give you more torque.....
Generally being the key word here...;)

Re: Prop Question

Thanks for the note.

Is there a reason why I need to be able to hit the specified WOT rpm other than speed ? This boat has been bleeding me dry lately and if I can hold off buying a new prop for a bit by using one I have that might be a good thing.

If I want to sleep in the house..........=o)

Re: Prop Question

your better off going with one that's lower pitch and watching the throttle to be sure you don't overrev the engine then going with a prop that's too big to turn to wot and lugging the engine. (if you have the choice). IN a pinch, you migh tbe able to find a cheap used aluminum prop that's close enough to your old one to work at a local marine shop. Most of the shops around here sell used props at half price of a new one if in excellent shape and then take off more for any damage or excessive wear...
