Prop question

I have a 1982 4cyl volvo penta 270 bayliner capri 19' boat. I had run over some small rocks in the water and it has taken off some of the aluminum off the properler blades - I have 3 blades - one of the blades has some of the edge missing (approx 1/2 inch) on the blade and I didnt think I hit the rocks so bad but apparently I did. The boat runs fine otherwise and I seen no other signs of damage but has lost some of its get up and go and speed. The propeller has been removed and I have a spare at home. The markings or specs on the props are mostly the same on both of them but there is a 301 on one prop and 401 on the other prop (I think) or its a 201. I am at work and I cant remember one or the other - I will know when I get home to see it again. I noticed all the other markings are the same and the numbers are all the same on both props besides that 301 and 401 thing. I dont know what that means. The boat when I bought it came with a spare propelor so I am hoping to use this one instead and have the damaged one reapired for a spare. Does anyone know what those markings are? Thanks for your assistance.

Re: Prop question

Sorry but I have one more question. Does anyone know what the exact prop I need or what is the required prop for my boat - ie: size or specs? I have the 4cyl engine

Re: Prop question

No I don't know.Get it rebuilt. The Volvo props work best on a Volvo. Aftermarket will work but the performance will suffer.
I had a friend change props and couldn't understand why his boat ran so poorly,He asked me to check it out and I went thru everything.I found nothing. I noticed the prop out on the ground and asked what it was for.He said he had changed it out the last weekend(didn't run it).I told him to put it back as it was good.He did and all his trouble was gone.
He had a 21 ft with a 125Volvo.It made all the difference.22mph compared to 35 with original.J

Re: Prop question

Thank You Jerry for your responses. Both of my props are Volvo Penta props and I will be using the good one, I know that they told me they can repair my bad one and I will be doing that. I hope that the number that was different wouldnt make a difference - I was thinking maybe its a pitch setting or something to that nature, but when I lined up both props side by side they look exact in size and width and everything - I just noticed that one had a marking of 301 and the other had a 401 marking - but they had other markings too like 14x19 on both and some other markings that were identical but just the 301 and 401 was different - and it made me wonder what that was and if it would make a difference in performance. I didnt buy the other prop because it came with the boat - I just hope that the guy before me who owned the boat bought the right part. I would hate to put on a prop that would screw up my boat but they look exact but I dont know much about pitch and things of that nature. Is it easy to recognize pitch if you line up 2 props side by side which pitch is on one and which is on the other, how do you even tell what a pitch is on a prop? I am new to this prop subject and actually this is the first prop i have ever taken off of a boat before. Any help or feedback is greatly appreciated.

Re: Prop question

14x19 means: 14" diameter and 19" pitch.

No clue as to the other numbers (401, etc.)!

Happy boating!
