Prop Question

I broke my first prop and just took off the old one and am putting my new one on my Volvo 3.0 I/O here. I'm noticing that the inside of the old prop has quite a bit of grease. My new one is dry as a bone. The shaft still has a good portion of grease on it as well from before. I'm wondering if that pre-existing grease on the shaft will be fine to just slide on the new prop and be good to go? Or is it an absolute must to lube-the-heck out of the shaft when putting on a new prop? Just wondering if it is critical or just optional. Thanks.
