Hello, My question is on a 1965 Mercury Outboard, 35 hp, Keikaefer, 2 stroke, 2 cylinder. I have searched the internet, high and low, have a Sealock Manual for the year, I still am not sure if I need to hold the collar doodad with a special tool when I turn the locknut. When I hold the prop with a 2x4 wedged and try to loosen, it really seems to be flexing the prop shaft, so I am really nervous about really laying into it, this is my first boat and outboard, and I really don't want to mess anything up. I'm getting H2O in my lower unit oil, so I really need to get it off and have a look at things behind there...Many thanks in advance! DSCN1537.jpg

to add, the boat is a 1965 Fabuglas 14' Runabout (Nashville TN) Fiberglas (pretty cool name!)

sorry, I can't seem to be able to edit prior posts, addition, more info, I bought if from the original owner's estate, who bought it new in '65, so I believe it to be the "stock" prop, it is aluminum, paint seems to match the rest of the motor.

Thanks again!

Ayuh,.... It appears the locking tab was never put on it,...

The nut should just turn off....

Thanks Bond-o, so it sounds like I should purchase a locking tab when I put it back together?

I'll try removing prop nut again when I get home from work tonight. My hunch is I am going to end replacing the water pump and probably the shaft seals if there is a bunch of fishing line behind there....reminds me , I need to pick up a slide hammer! :)

Do you have a s/n?

Here is the parts listing for a 1965 350:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/1105.cfm

See the prop stackup under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 2)

See if you can get something good and solid under the back end of the hub to resist the downward force of your wrench or socket to at least minimize shaft bending.

What you will require a tool for is the removal of cover nut, item 69 under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 2). Blow up the picture of the nut and you will see the four internal tangs on it. I have one made from a piece of pipe.

Thanks for the parts list link Gerry, that will come in very handy , as well as the tool suggestion, I think I can handle that no prob. I love saving $.

Bond-o, I thought I read on a different site, to use a breaker bar, not to an impact wrench (although I don't recall them giving a specific reason). If impact is ok, I have one, and certainty will use it -- that seems to make the most sense (using an impact) since it would minimize any sort of side load on the prop shaft.

Again many many thanks, I have heard very good things about this site, and it all seems to be true!

If you have the prop pinned against a 2X4 I don't see how an impact wrench would be a problem.
Much safer than horsing on a pry bar.You might spray a little PB blaster or some other penitrating
solution.
I have the big brother to yours.A 65 Merc 500. I haven't looked real hard but you may find a prop may be
hard to find.
