Prop Replacement, apply pressure?

Hi all, quick question: I have a 9.9 hp Gamefisher on my dingy. It has been a good "dingy" motor. It is from Sears not sure who the oem is. Anyway I got a new prop for it from sears. Same part number and specs. It seems that the shaft is a bit big for the prop to receive it. My question is do I apply pressure to install a new prop? It looks like the material that would be in contact with the shaft is softer than the rest of the prop...

Thanks in advance!

David

I've never seen a prop that didn't just slide on, but then I'm not familiar with this motor either. How is it attached to the shaft? Splines, shear pin or what?

Hi Jack, it is attached by splines I believe. They are like ribs running the lenght of the shaft. They are evenly distributed around the shaft. The prop has the slots to receive them but is about 15% too small. I could use pressure and push it on...

Thanks

Re: Prop Replacement, apply pressure?

If the prob hub is made of softer material and you're sure it's the right part [or the only one you can get], I believe I'd grease the shaft up good and press it on. It may be made to fit this way, for all I know. I'd pull it off every year and re-grease the shaft, though. Maybe some of the guys who have some experience with this motor will come along and give a better answer.

At best size on size will press on. 15% difference smaller will not fly. How would you get it off?????

Re: Prop Replacement, apply pressure?

Well there was no pressing it on, not only would it have been tough to get off but I might have damaged something in the lower unit. I did figure out that I could, with a great deal of pressure, push the hub out of the old prop and the new prop and swap them. The hub has a rubber bushing that is glued and wraps around it. It is not glued into the prop, just pressure fitted... I was able to use a vise and swap them. Worked like a charm. Old hub in great shape pressed into the new prop.

Thanks for you help and advice,

David
