Prop rotation.

HI,
I FITTED A NEW PROP TO MY AQ170 280 LEG AND ALTHOUGH THE DETAILS ON THE PROP SEEMED IDENTICAL TO THE NEW PROP ..FORWARD IS NOW REVERSE AND VICE VERSA!..AS MY BOAT IS NOW IN THE MARINA ..IS IT SAFE TO LEAVE IT THIS WAY TILL THE END OF THE SEASON OR WILL IT DAMAGE THE STERNDRIVE?...THANKS..

I'm no volvo expert but I think its a simple adjustment to change the rotation. My guess is yours may have been left hand rotation
and you installed a right hand prop. Viewed from behind the boat right hand rotation is clockwise.And imagine the blades pushing water toward you as you stand behind.Its neither safe to leave it and probably bad for the gear case.

Hi,
can anyone help please...can the rotation of the propeller be changed on a volvo penta aq170 with a 280 leg..??? Since fitting a new propeller i now have forward is reverse and vice versa!!..or would i need to buy another propeller?

because the original prop was so badly damaged that identification was impossible...as it was a boat i had just purchased..there was an old prop in the cabin..which had various numbers on it and when i checked bought and fitted prop found that it was in wrong direction.

It would be easier to get a different prop. Can you trade in the one you have or return it?

Thanks for replying Mike!.....Someone has told me that you can change the linkage easily via the inspection plate on the sterndrive!!..I did find it stange that there were two different rotation propellers on boat!!..Thanks for your help!..

I would get a new prop. This can not be good for your lower unit and I would think changing the rotation of the entire prop shaft is not an easy task. I am not an expert at this but with this type of thing, you could wind up costing yourself a lot more money if you damage the gearing. Good luck.

The Volvo drives can switch rotation easily and can handle either left or right hand rotation the same, no potential for damage.

The adjustment is made at the shift linkage connection on the drive.

Repost this in the Volvo section where more Volvo literate members can see it.

Ayuh,.... You've gone from yer prop question to a Drive question,...

Take this Drive question on down to the Volvo forum,....

I'm sure somebody down there can explain what you've gotta do to reverse the direction of the prop shaft,...

Yes, I believe it's not only possible, but also reasonably easy to do...

That's cool that you can switch the direction of the drive. At least the OP does not have to buy a new prop.
