I have a 1984 9.9 evinrude and just recently the lower unit began dripping oil from the prop shaft. I've taken it out a couple times since the leak and I make sure to fill the shaft before I take it out. It doesn't need much of a refill before it comes out of the vent hole. The motor also runs like a champ! Anyway, is it safe to continue taking out the boat/motor and keep checking the fluid level or is it best to fix it ASAP? I'd like to keep using it as much as possible before I spend the bux to fix the leak. Any information is greatly appreciated. By the way 12footer, I printed your article--great information. MB

Re: Prop seal leak

Well, except for the enviroment, it doesn't really matter if a tiny bit of oil is leakin out.. long as you keep it topped up..

The concern arises when water is getting in.. if the oil looks at all milky, then a seal change is called for ASAP.. (there are usually two seals, one to keep oil in, and one to keep water out.) if its just the former thats leaking, no big rush.. but you might as well do it now. as the gearcase oil aint cheap...

regards

Frank

so as long as water isn't mixed with the oil, it is ok to keep using it? I'd like to keep fishin' while I can . :)

Re: Prop seal leak

If I did want to replace the seal, is it a difficult job even with the evinrude manual? I hate to take it to a shop and spend the money especially if I could do it myself.
