I just bought a 16 ft. Polarkraft jon boat with a 1995 Mariner 30hp. The prop is damaged and I need a new one. The current prop is a 10x14P. The rig does not have a Tach. I think the 14P might be too much from previous experience with other boats I've owned. Does anyone know if this size is the "stock" prop for this engine? What advice can you give about selecting a new size? Should I just buy a tach and experiment? Thanks

I don't think there is such a thing as a 'stock' prop. Weight and usage make every motor/boat pairing different.

Thats what I did. Worst case is you end up with one or two spares. Its probably cheaper to get yours repaired.

To get the most out of a prop you will need a tach to reference WOT, then go from there.

Take a look at the prop FAQ at the top of the page.

Aldo

Repair is most likely the cheapest route, however, I would recommend repair and a purchace of a new prop-of course a tach too.
If you were to repair the old, install a tach, check RPM and you will know what to purchase for a new prop and have the repair for a spare, which at some time, you will be glad you had one.
