Hello everybody , I need to change my prop shaft. Just wondering how it's done.can a guy do it without removing the leg.am I going to need new seals or anything like that? I've never seen the inside of a leg or know how big of a job it is .anybody got any pics. Or insight on this task? It's a 83 125 force

Re: Prop shaft install?

If it is just the prop shaft, it is not too big a job, but for ease of working and reassembly it is way better to remove the lower unit. Drain the lower unit. Pull the prop and remove the anode that is behind it, then remove the four spool bolts (1/2 inch socket). Pull out the spool first then remove the two half rings holding the reverse gear bearing carrier. Then simply lift out the prop shaft and gear assembly. The spool is sealed with two O rings and frequently is difficult to remove due to corrosion.

It will be much easier to assemble the new shaft and engage the shift mechanism if you remove the water pump and torpedo shaped base plate. Then you can see the shift saddle as you slide it into the yoke.
