Prop Shaft Question

I own a 2006 Tahoe Q4 SF OB with a 115 Mercury FS. I recently purchased a new SS prop (13.25 x 17) from Cabela's. The barrel is approximatly 1/2" shorter than the aluminum that came on the boat, so now the prop shaft sticks out of the back of the prop about the same. Is this something I need to worry about? I haven't had a chance to run it yet. The prop spins freely by hand. Thanks, Mike

Re: Prop Shaft Question

Shouldn't be a problem but I would make sure you have the proper thrust washer for the prop.

Re: Prop Shaft Question

I thought about that, but the thrust washer would have to be at least 1/2" thicker than what I have now. I held the prop out to align the barrel with the end of the shaft and the barrel is no longer inside of the 'housing' it slides into when assembled. I don't think there will be a problem leaving it as is. I just wanted to check here as there is a wealth of knowledge on this board from a lot more experienced boaters than I am. I appreciate your response. Thanks, Mike

Re: Prop Shaft Question

Aside from being shorter is the barrel smaller in diameter also?

Re: Prop Shaft Question

Mike, If I understand you, as currently installed, the prop can slide 1/2" fore and aft along the prop shaft. If so you need to change something as the prop must be hard secured to the propshaft with the lock nut (pressing against the rear of the prop) torqued to the OEM recommended value.....55 to 100 ft lbs.

Re: Prop Shaft Question

The barrel is the same diameter. When the lock nut is torqued to specs, the prop does not move fore and aft. I was referring to the fore/aft movement when the prop was not tightened. When tightened, the prop shaft sticks out of the rear of the prop about 1/2". I would need a thrust wash that is at least 1/2" thicker than what I have now, but that will leave a gap between the front of the prop and the lower unit. I will take a couple of pictures tomorrow to help describe what I am talking about. My cable to transfer the photo from the camera is at my office. Thanks for your help. Mike
