Have an alpha one serial numberA696658. Was out cleaning today getting ready for the weekend and AWE SH__! Oil leaking out of propeller shaft seal. Drained oil and thankfully it was not a milk shake. How difficult is it to change out that seal? I am fairly mechanically inclined and definatly not afraid to ask questions. So a little help would be greatly apreciated

Re: Prop shaft question

you are gonna need an OEM manual and at least one special tool for removing/re-installing the bearing carrier retainer - that is if this is the only problem seal

a 200 lb/ft torque wrench and a long two jaw puller are also needed, heat and penetrating oil for removing the carrier, seal puller and a shop press aid GREATLY in removing/installing the seal(s)

I replaced mine today. Just the 2 seals not the big o-ring on the carrier. I pulled the seals with a $5 seal puller and replaced the 2 seals with a 12'' plastic conduit pipe to drive them in , 5 mins. But if the carrier is leaking around the outside it want help you.

Re: Prop shaft question

Finally got around to replacing prop shaft seals yesterday. Piece of cake. Ordered the prop seal tooll from mercstuff, the one where you do not have to remove carrier housing. Worked slick as snot. Test ran and works fine with no leaks and also pressure tested outdrive and good to go all together. Thanks guys for the help.
