Motor is 89 40hp Evinrude. Can the prop shaft seals(2) be replaced without removing the bearing carrier? If so can someone give me some direction on how to pull the seals out. Motor is pretty clean and only been in fresh water.Do I need a puller to remove bearing carrier? Thanks and appreciate any help.

From looking at a diagram of that LU I belive that the carrier bearing housing will have to come out and you will need to have a puller, or make one, inorder to get the carrier housing out. Not realy a bad job and the seals are fairly cheap. You should invest in a service manual for the motor as it will give complete instructions and diagrams for replaceing most everything on the motor. Most manuals run from 25 up to 70 bucks for a manufacture manual and are a cheap investment if one plans on keeping the motor, and can add too the sale of it otherwise. JMO

Check out UTube.com for visual instructions for replacing seals. Some people will drill small holes in the seals and use dent puller hooks to pull'em. Some will use a small slide hammer to pull'em. You also want to replace the shift rod seal on top of the lower unit at the same time. I was quoted about $330 to replace seals on my Yamaha 115 hp 2 stroke.

You'll want to get the lower unit pressure and vacuum tested after the seals are replaced.

Have a Seloc manual for this motor but its lacking in some areas. Thought maybe could get by w/o pulling carrier. Thanks.

The more you use it, the more you'll discover how lacking that seloc manual is. Get an OEM, they aren't but a few dollars more.

Evinrude makes a special seal remover and installer tool set that just takes a short time to replace the shaft seals without any dissassembly of the gearcase after you remove the prop and thrust washer. Most good dealers can do the whole job including draining, refilling, and pressure testing in less than an hour.

I got the seals out by pulling bearing carrier. When installing new seals besides putting grease between seals
does anything else go on seals like sealer on surface of carrier?

I used to use OMC gasket sealing compond on the seal outer surfaces and the bearing carrier. You can also use Permatex # 3.
