prop shaft

I have a 1991 Mercuriser alpha one series one and hit a rock with the prop last time out. It broke the top off the drive shaft that goes through the water pump. I have the prop shaft bearing carrier out, the shift shaft out but the prop shaft won't come out. Does the water pump shaft have to come out first? There is a nut on the bottom of the water pump shaft holding a gear on but I cannot get it loose. I tried a 7/8" open end wrench but it is rounding the corners off. Any body ever taken one apart and have any ideas?

The broken driveshaft and pinion have to be removed as the forward gear and prop shaft come out at the same time..

Thanks Faztbullet, is there a special tool for the nut on the drive shaft, would you happen to know the size of the nut, is it 7/8"​
