I have a 84 model 40hp Merc. on a 16ft. alum fishing boat that I have used since 86 with no problems. It has a 3 blade brass prop that was on motor when I first got it..Experienced no problems until today. Seems to be slipping or cavitating. Under power will pull for a while, then motor will high rev all at once. I can go back to idle and prop will reingage and continue to apply propulsion at low speed and a little more, then slip again. What is my problem? Prop hub?

Welcome to Iboats

If it's a exhaust through prop and being 31 years old, it's Waterloo Time (Kaput) Need a new one, or send to a prop shop to have the hub replaced.

Happy Boating

I'll second that. The hub has failed.
Originally the hub was supposed to slip if you strike something hard to protect the drive train.
Not unusual for it to fail with age.
The bronze prop is worth the cost to have it rehubbed at a prop shop.
