How do I test for prop slippage and what advice is there for replacing. I have a 88hp SPL Johnson 1987 model. My boat is a ski boat and it struggle swhen under a load and lately it struggles without a load when I gun it.

Re: Prop slippage

"Struggles" really doesn't come across as "slipping". It more or less plants a picture in ones mind of a engine shaking, viberating, attempting to overcome the impossible.

If the rpms increase and the boat slows down, that would indicate a possible slipping problem.

Have the engine in gear (engine not running), block the prop with a block of wood, try to turn the engine over via a breaker bar and socket on the flywheel nut.

If you can crank the engine over with the breaker bar with the prop blocked, obviously the prop hub would be faulty and slipping.
