Hello all, what a great site and the only reason we bought a boat, well we are new boater's and new to us boat. a 1981 22' cobia 228 with mercruiser v6 250cc and 120/140 outdrive. the prop was really bad chewed up so i got a new prop from iboat so i took off the old one (48-87118-p17) put the new one (14.8 x17) in place and thighten her up so everything looks good, wait i notice that the old thrush hub was stuck on the old prop. so now my problem is i cant get the new prop off to install the thrush hub. i tryed about one hour trying to pry this thing off with no luck. Do i need to install this thrush hub? is there a way to get it off without damaging the new prop? but i ran the boat on muffs and everything seems fine. please help
thanks in advance

Welcome aboard wbudna!!

I'd have to see it, but almost all props require a thrust hub. ALL of your horsepower is transmitted there and you need to get that prop off anyway. What are you going to do if you hit something on the water, damage it so bad that you can get home? Even if you carry a spare you're screwed if you can't get the old one off. You can get a three legged puller at most auto parts stores, I am sure there is one that would do the trick. Autozone loans them for free (deposit), and you don't even have to buy anything. When you do get it off, put some grease on it before you put it back on.

Re: prop stuck?

Q is giving you very good advie as always, but if that doesn't work you might try baking the nut off about 1/2" and taking it down to the launhing ramp and tieing it to the dok and put it in reverse and putting it in reverse and hitting the throttle fairly strong a few times and then running the RPM up some and letting the prop itself pull it away from the drive unit.

Re: prop stuck?

thanks guys i will try the puller first and see what happens. also when the thrush hub goes on does the splined nut suppose to fit on the propeller shaft snug or just sits on top and not fit into the shaft groves?
thanks

Re: prop stuck?

You can grind down the trim tab for clearance . . . Do you have power steering? If so, you can grind it clean off if you want.
