Hi Guys,

I purchased a '77 Mariner 85 hp outboard a few days ago. The motor didnt come with a prop so Im in the market for one, however I do know it's a 13" prop. Being that there isnt a prop, I do not have a WOT figure to supply. So Im looking for the best educated guess as to what I should purchase. I have a 18' Alumacraft Queen Merrie, with the new interior and normal load it should weigh in at around 900 lbs. I understand that there is some missing info here, but Im looking for the best SAFE, EDUCATED guess. I need something to get me on the water so I can get these figures and if needed make adjustments from there.

I went to the local shop and the guy there recommended a 13x17. Im some what new to this which doesnt mean Im clueless, but looking for more than 1 other opinion.

Thanks for any suggestions

Jeff

My "guess" would be a 15p 4 blade if you plan on doing any water sports or taking any heavy loads. The Solas Amita is an excellent 4 blade aluminium prop which is under 100 bucks here on iboats.

You might be able to turn a 17p 4 blade but its better to be slightly under propped than over propped. (less pitch vs. more pitch).

The goal is to get a prop that allows you to reach the top end of the manufacturers recomended RPM range at WOT with an average load.

If you go with a 15 or 17 I'd go with a 4 blade either way. They provide excellent low speed to mid speed performance and good top end.
