I have a newly purchased 2000 Evinrude 70hp 4-stroke on a '96 Crestliner FishHawk tiller.

The prop that came with it has no stamping on it so I cannot size it. It also has a flat spot on the hub that makes it run out of balance.

Anyhoo, I looked at what it should have and found an old article saying it should run a 17.

But, I'm unsure. Thoughts?

Tach current prop lightly loaded, check achieved max wot rpm run, ideally between middle to max wot rpm range for that OB. If water performance was satisfactorily, remove prop, take to prop shop and have it measured. Or you could start with a 17 as a starter, but it's not an indication will work spot on on your current set up, will also need to be wot tached with a healthy tach, can go from there maximizing a prop to suit best your boating needs..

Often the prop size will appear under the prop nut.A 17 is certainly a reasonable starting point.
