prop turns opposite??

I recently changed my impeller on my 77 searay, it's an inboard 350 with mercruiser power train. When I was putting it together I had the shifter in neutral and the leg in neutral. But when I put it into forward the prop free wheels turning forward but is in gear for reverse and same with reverse. Still has neutral just forward is reverse and reverse is forward. What did I do wrong?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.. That's the way it works,.... Thrust from the motor will lock it up, 'n push the boat,....

Turn the motor off, 'n the water pressure will push the prop backwards, allowin' the clutch to chatter,...

When I change a prop, put the drive in forward to take the nut off, 'n reverse to tighten it back up,...
