Prop upgrade

I have a 16' Basstracker with a 40HP Mariner ('91 in japan). I need to upgrade my prop to SS. I do not have a tactometer to manually figure out the correct pitch. Is there a safe assumption to make considering the boat and motor? I read somewhere that you go down 2 degrees from the alum prop that came with it. I don't even know how to find out the pitch on the one I have now. Any suggestions?

Re: Prop upgrade

post back with the numbers on the prop. It should be on the hub base, between the blades. Look for 17p or 15p(pitch) on it somewhere.

I would invest in a tach before anything else. Not only will it tell you your RPMs, but it helps you keep track of how your engine is performing. If the RPMs drop from previous numbers you know something is going wrong! Ive read about the ease of installing the tiny tack, And they seen to work well for people here on the forum.

I have looked everywhere on that prop and can't find any numbers. Should I take it off and check? Is the tack something I can install with a few of my friends that are a little more "tackfull" than I am? I will still need to know the pitch of the current one. Thanks for the help guys.
