Prop ?

I have read on these forums quite a bit and finally decided to register and ask you guys a question as there seems to be a lot of knowledgable boat guys here or at least guys with opinions :) and that's what I am looking for.

I have a 165 Lowe Crappie boat with a 2007 Mercury 50HP Outboard. It currently has a Quicksilver 10 1/8", 15 pitch prop on it and the motor maxes out at 5000 rpm and 35 mph. I am considering going to a Stainless Steel prop and was curious should I go to 14 pitch? 13 Pitch? or stay with a 15 pitch? I've looked at the Michigan Wheel Ballistic, and Apollo, also the Mercury Vengeance but I am open to any brand, model, etc. Any advice, suggestions, or opinions are welcomed. Thanks!!

Re: Prop ?

Stainless usually gains about 100 rpm over aluminum, but there are other factors that can affect rpm cup, & rake not sure what rpm you should be at, but seems a little low, could probably go to a 14, but would get a better selection from in a 13

I would check with a dealer and see if you can try a prop or 2 if you buy one. If your engine is a 2 stroke I would start with a SST 13 inch

Since you need to increase your WOT rpm, I'll second the motion for a SS 13 pitch to replace your aluminum 15.

Putting a SS 15 on there would only serve to lower your rpm, which you don't need.

Re: Prop ?

A couple weeks ago I'd agree with the 13 pitch.
After being inlightened in another thread just a day or so ago,it probably won't be so simple.
They were saying a SS prop can run alittle higher rpm;pitches being the same.

I guess what I'm saying is,see if the place you buy your prop from, will let you try acouple before you spend all that cash.

It Looks like a 13 pitch or possibly a 14 pitch is gonna be my choice. Looking at a Stiletto Triad II. Has anyone used one of these props or has any feedback on them? Thanks to everyone!

Very nice props, good bite. You'll probably be able to mount the motor a little higher, especially if it's all the way down now or too low, which will reduce drag and increase overall efficiency.

Re: Prop ?

Checked the tag on the motor and it says Max RPM 5500. So if I lose a few rpms going from an Aluminum to Stainless I probably need to drop down to a 13 pitch, but if I gain a few rpm's by the switch a 14 pitch might be a good decision?

Choices, choices!! :)

Re: Prop ?

Set up is the key. With the ss prop that you're looking at you'll probably be able to mount the motor higher. Less drag means more rpm and better overall performance.

If I may sir: And you can probably stay with your current pitch of 15 on that new SS prop. Additionally, most SS props are cupped and your alum probably not and that, as Mr. Hadley said, will allow you to run your prop closer to the surface without ventilating. You'd be amazed what just one hole of engine height will do to your performance. I get really good performance out of my boat and the AV plate is 1.5" above the bottom of the boat measured with AV plate parallel to straight edge against bottom.
