I got an ad in the mail along with the bill from my propane supplier. They are recommending a weedwhacker from LEHR, Inc. that runs on propane and offering a big discount.

For years I have had to strip the carb on my Weedeater every time I wanted to use it. I have quit using it in favor of an electric, but I don't have a 500' extension cord to deal with fences, etc that are away from the house.

Does anyone have any experience with the LEHR propane powered trimmer? Is the engine a 4 stroke? If it is a 2 stroke how is it lubed?

I've seen a Chinese made weedwhacker and blower that were 4 stroke and used propane down in the Carribbean, that was the first and only time i have ever seen anything like it, the feller who had them seemed happy with them. i did not get a real good close up inspection view of the equipment, therefore i cannot say much else.

I used to have to overhaul all the small engine fuel systems on the farm every year. Some were pretty nasty, like fuel hose disintegrating inside a chain saw fuel tank.

Since I made it law that only non-oxygenated fuel and top grade oil goes into them, I don't have any problems. Just normal wear, like Husky saws wearing through the fuel line where it goes through the handle.

I've been considering one myself. At least you get away from the ethanol problem some of us are forced to face. I converted a land cruiser to propane and it is a clean fuel, the oil in the crankcase never got dirty!
The ones I am looking at are 4 strokes.

Never seen one..it makes me think ...on a car truck set up you have a fuel lock off with a filter...vapourizer.hooked into heater hose line to add vapour to the propane before it goes to the mixer{instead of a carb}and into the intake....how they would vapourize the propane on an air cooled 4 stroke could be tricky....propane has 130 octane so it burns hotter and cleaner....you use a colder plug and less gap on the set up..also timming curve is less than gas

I see Sears sells a re-labeled (Craftsman) LEHRS propane trimmer too.

I have a rechargeable Black and Decker string trimmer. It works well for a residential lot, but wouldn't cut it for an acreage unless you had extra battery packs.

I was not aware of these products until now. Not having to winterize it/no gummed up carb sells it for me. I was going to buy a Husqvarna or Echo when my Homelite finally dies, but I think I will look into these now. I wish they had a backpack style leaf blower. It's about that time of year.

Thanks JB!

I wonder if it runs off of LPG, and not vapor like my old land cruiser did. I built my kit on my cruiser from forklift parts. I'm wanting to buy a propane trimmer so I can take it apart. :D

If there is a conversion kit that one could purchase, then there won't be a need to retire the old weed eater, blower or perhaps the lawn mower.

Well, I managed to learn that they use a 55cc 4 stroke engine and a camping style Propane bottle. Weigh 15#.

Think I may get one while the propane dealer offers such a big discount.

How heavy are they with the propane cylinder attached, when compared to a regular weed eater ?

Re: Propane powered weedwhacker.

A guy was selling these propane powered weed trimmers at our local Flea Market/Jockey Lot this weekend, I didn't recognize the name on the units, but they were asking about $90. Those little tanks of propane are about $3 at Walmart and just wonder how long it'll run on that? Must be a 4 stroke motor or they'd have to provide for an oiling system? Guess I'll just stick with these @#$% gas powered units for now! These new battery powered units look good for smaller yards or in town where noise is a factor.

You can get a fill adapter from places like Harbor Freight so you can fill those little green 14 ounce "camping" canisters from a larger tank like a 20lb grill tank.
