Propane tanks worth updating.

I recently purchased a travel trailer, that came with 2 30# tanks, that have the old-style valves.

The camper does fine with the smaller tanks, but it would be nice to have larger tanks filled and available, around the farm, for use on the gas grill, or heating the garage.

Does anyone know what it might cost to convert them, or whether it's even worth it? The tanks are about 20 years old.

30 lb OPD valve is about 23 bucks. New tank is around 50 or 60. If the tank is in good enough shape to be certified, it's worth the new valve.

As long as the tanks can be re-certified, then I would go for the valves, we used to update tanks all the time when I was in the RV business, whats cool about propane is you can even change the valve on a full tank, did that many times, crack it open on full and it will freeze up, take the valve out and install the new one...

Huh,..?? With the valve removed, it's on Open 3/4" pipe thread in the tank...

That sounds Very Unsafe, 'n ridiculously Stupid...

OPDs must match the size of the tank, don't put a 20lb. valve in a 30lb tank...
If ya wanta change it,...
Please do it with an Empty tank...

Personally, I've done it... I'd just Replace the tanks myself...

At 20 below zero, you can carry propane in a milk pail. Once in awhile a valve gets changed out in cold weather here in the tundra with fuel in the tank.

What'll blow your mind is it takes a little heat on the bottom of the tank to get it delivering gas again. We rednecks usually just use a weed burner.

Actually that is the way we were taught to change them out in our propane certification classes by the state instructor. In the state of WA where I worked, you have to be certified to work on propane equipment hence having to go to school to get that certification.

So what sounds stupid to you, is in fact what is taught in a state certification class, take it up with the instructors...
