I resently bought a 1974 Mod 40 4HP Mercury outboard motor. It runs great. I'm trying to learn all I can about it. My question is how do I remove the Propeller. I remove the nut and spline step washer but still could not slide the prop off the shaft???
I am mechanical inclined but don't have a manual yet. I would appreciate any help. Also where could I purchase a good user freindly manual? Final question what is the gas/oil mixture (1 pint quicksilver for 6 gal of gas?) Thanks ducksir

Re: propellar

50:1 is correct. fuel
OEM MERC manual is the best.
Prop removal, apperently you can't pull it off.???
Lube the spline with oil in the up position for a few days. Knock the prop with a rubber mallet back and forth. do that and reply.
Is this a salt water motor?

Thanks for the info. I will try your suggestion and let you how I come out. I don't know but I doubt it to be a salt water motor. However from the location where I bought it (western KY) I wouldn't think it has been run in salt water.

Ayuh,... Even freshwater motors need the propshaft well Greased, or you end up where you're at now....

Re: propellar

If its a 3 blade prop, you'll need a 3 jawed gear puller to take the prop off.
Replace the jaws with enough chain to wrap around the blades.
However there is the chance that the prop will separate from the hub and then you'll need to cut the hub off the shaft and have a prop shop install a new one.
This usually costs as much as a new prop so only remove if you absolutely have to in order to replace a leaky seal etc...

Re: propellar

Hi Mi Duckdown,
everything went fine and dandy. It took about an hour this afternoon to remove the prop. I followed your advise. First I use penetrating oil and then 3n1oil. I also used a hair dryer to warm it up. Kept tapping it with rubber hammer until it came off. The spline shaft was dryer than an old dry dog bone. You just have to take your time and be patient. Don't get too rough with it. I cleaned it and greased it with marine grease and put it back on. No damage at all.

Re: propellar

That should be done every year with service and oil change. How else would you find the damaging fish line in your prop seal?
