I've just bought a (cheap) Evinrude 4hp to use as an auxiliary (s/n 43B36c B36824 made in Belgium). I guess from looking at it that it's a 70's model.

The engine came with the prop off and I'm not sure it's the right one (although it's plastic and seems to fit ok). The prop shaft has a hole through it about 3" in and a recessed part near the end. There is a split pin in the prop which fits into this recessed bit which stops it falling off. However, the prop has no holes for a shear pin but it does have a cut-out for a 'woodruff' key. Is there supposed to be some sort of 'key' on a 'pin' that goes into the prop shaft to stop the prop spinning on the shaft?

If you look at the back side of the prop,is there a hollow area inside? If so,there may be an internal hub that is missing or you may have the incorrect prop. The internal hub locks onto the prop and fits over the shear pin(on propshaft). This hub may be made of plastic. The cotter pin(split) holds the prop on the shaft like you mentioned.Good luck. :)

Your right. I managed to get the internal hub out of the prop and there a hole through it which lines up with the hole in the prop shaft. I haven't got a shear pin but I'll try and get one tomorrow. Are they bespoke or universal?

Thanks for the advice - it's appreciated......

Legin,
Universal?? Nope , not really. Different motors, different sizes. Bespoke, usually. If you use a pin that's too small (O.D.) it can shear prematurely. Best to use an exact replacement per manufactures specs. Hesitate to use a nail, it won't shear when you need it too the most. The pin helps protect the lower unit gears, prop and drivetrain. I personally use OMC pins for the peace of mind. Others may disagree.
