1978 55HP Johnson Model# 55EL78S

Thanks to all for the answers on my model number question. Here's another:

The propeller that came with my motor is a stainless steel (unknown brand) 11 3/4 x 19p. Very heavy.

I have no doubt that this propeller is either too big and/or pitched too high. My max RPMs at WOT will not go past 4000, even though the motor is running pefectly. I have no idea what the correct prop size should be. I made sure the prop didn't spin its hub before I wrote this message.

Anyone know the correct size and pitch for this motor? In my case, top end is more important than holeshot. Actually, I really don't care how fast it comes out of the hole. I just want to get the RPMs up so I don't ruin the motor.

Thanks again,
Eric

Eric

Re: Propeller size

I would guess 11 3/4 X 13 or 15. The theory is that going down 1 pitch makes the motor go up 200-300 RPM.
