Propeller Spacer Critical?

I have a 2000, 90 horse Johnson, model #RJ90PLSSE, I removed the propeller and noticed that the diagram shows a "spacer" behind the propeller nut. Is that part mission critical? My unit was missing this part. Can a suitable replacment be found at my local hardware store or is that a trip to the boat shop?

Thank you.

Yep, needs to be there. Keeps the prop nut snug against the propeller hub. If no spacer then you can have the prop sliding fore and aft on the propshaft. Bad things can happen...

Look at it this way - if OMC out a spacer on your propshaft at the factory, there probably is a reason why and it probably isn't because they had a bunch of round things hanging around the parts bin, that they didn't know what to do with!
