No one will be able to answer: Your question is too open and like asking "I am looking for a woman. Anyone know what size or kind I should get?"

Boat and engine combinations are as varied as women. The right one for one man will not necessarily be the right one for you

We need the size of the boat and the hull type. We also need the approximate average load ie. 4 people, 6 people etc. We need to know the intended use too. THEN, we can give you a guess as to approximate pitch (Force 85 takes a 13 inch diameter). However, for best guessing, you also need to supply the RPM at wide open throttle with the current prop. Without that number you may not get the correct prop.

Re: Propeller

Sorry I'm new to boating. Its a 1984 16' Bayliner Cuddy with a 1984 Force 85 HP Engine. I have no idea what the pitch means/is. I measured the propeller and it looks to be about 12" wide. 5 Person CApacity. My RPM guage isnt working

Re: Propeller

For the diameter measure from the center to the tip of one blade and double the result.
Pitch is measured in inches the theoretical distance it moves through the water in one revolution.
Your prop may have numbers near the based of the blades
Pitch is the key number if the prop is intended for your motor the diameter will follow.
It also may be cost effective to have your prop repaired.
However if your prop appears to be original a new prop may be more technologically advanced.
The prop store here only lists a 17 and 19" prop.
Its safe to say your cuddy should use a 17"
This is assuming the motor is healthy and the boat's sound.
It is important that your motor operates within it's rpm range.
The wrong prop may put the motor below its rated wot rpm or allow it to run higher than it should.
Of course once properly setup you can run at what ever rpm you choose.
A Tinytach is about $47 and will work on any motor as a hand held or installed.
A gps is excellent for speed.some cells have a gps app.

Does nobody see the READ THIS FIRST note just above their post when they enter this forum. Do they not at least scan the first page to see if their question has already been answered - about a hundred times? Guess I've not had enough coffee yet this morning.

Re: Propeller

Some spend hours looking for threads.Others struggle just trying to figure out how to post.
It appears to me that the search function on here is poor at best.
After 10 years I still consider myself a computer beginner. I don't think I've ever typed out an address and had it work.
I can barely find and attach pictures to my email, Craigs list or ebay.
Imagine a youngster just getting going in boating and computers trying to figure out how to get around a site,
get registered, figure out how to start a thread etc etc.Is it any wonder we get questions like "what prop does my Merc need"?
I think we all learn as we go along in life.
We can be thankful for those that come in prepared and should tolerate those that are green.
