Re: proper 2 cycle oil
Graven.... OMC Johnson/Evinrude did not make a 35hp in 1961 but I understand what you're asking. When OMC first came out with the 50/1 oil, they issued a bulletin that stated that is was safe to use the new 50/1 oil mixture on all of the engines they had manufactured, including the ones of yesteryear... excluding the older 7-1/2hp models.

Many technicians state that the 50/1 mixture should not be used on any engine that does not incorporate needle bearings throughout the powerhead (con/rod, wrist pin, main bearings) and I can understand their reasoning. However, I am aware of many older engines in the 3hp, 5hp, etc that have been running the 50/1 mixture for years without encountering problems.

A general rule of thumb is, if you know the engine has needle bearings through out, use the 50/1 (1pt to 6gal) mixture with confidence. If in doubt about the needle bearing setup, use the 24/1 mixture (1qt to 6gal).

Should I ever come across the bulletin I mentioned, I'll post it.
