I am timing my 351 W and have a question. Engine SN is 4494638 1976 mercruiser 233. I've set the dwell angle and double checking timing. The question I have is 'what is the proper angle for the timing light?' I looked at the timing sticky and didn't see the answer.
The stationary timing 'needle' is at roughly 1 o'clock relative to the harmonic balancer. Do I shoot the timing light and read the timing marks as if looking down the 1 o'clock line (i.e., looking down the line from the 1 o'clock position to the harmonic balancer center)? Or do I point the timing light straight down onto the needle (i.e., perpendicular to the horizon).
The parallax error between these two positions is pretty large. Thanks.
