Re: Proper emblem for green '57 Merc Mark 30?
Hi Joakley,
The black or silver background isn't an issue with the color of the motor, but rather the year of production. Black emblems are typically 1957 model year, while silver are 1958 (and later). The silver emblem was also used on the white teardrop shaped single lever control boxes. Drop us a serial number and we can nail the year down for you, or perhaps offer a description of the decals.
A 1956 Mark 30 would have block letters, italicized, with an arrow motif running back to front with three arrow points at the front. Cast aluminum crest on the face-plate with three chevrons.
A 1957 Mark 30 would have a wave pattern to the Mercury lettering, with a "whale tale" type background. Plastic emblem on faceplate, black background to the emblem, with three chevrons.
A 1958 Mark 30 would have a similar decal to the 1956, but with larger block letters forming the Mercury name. Plastic emblem on faceplate, silver background to the emblem, with three chevrons.
The number of chevrons are as follows, A Mark 25 had two chevrons, a Mark 30 had three chevrons, a Mark 55 (40hp) had four chevrons, a Mark 75 (60hp) had six chevrons.
Hope that helps...
- Scott
