I bought a nice Mark 30 that needs a new emblem, cracked.
The ads and photos I've seen show this motor with the black background emblem (lower right) but the one now on mine is the one shown in the upper right of the 4 repro emblems:
http://www.iserv.net/~shapton/emblems.html
Anyone here have one (green hood) and know which one's proper?

Re: Proper emblem for green '57 Merc Mark 30?

Hi Joakley,
The black or silver background isn't an issue with the color of the motor, but rather the year of production. Black emblems are typically 1957 model year, while silver are 1958 (and later). The silver emblem was also used on the white teardrop shaped single lever control boxes. Drop us a serial number and we can nail the year down for you, or perhaps offer a description of the decals.
A 1956 Mark 30 would have block letters, italicized, with an arrow motif running back to front with three arrow points at the front. Cast aluminum crest on the face-plate with three chevrons.
A 1957 Mark 30 would have a wave pattern to the Mercury lettering, with a "whale tale" type background. Plastic emblem on faceplate, black background to the emblem, with three chevrons.
A 1958 Mark 30 would have a similar decal to the 1956, but with larger block letters forming the Mercury name. Plastic emblem on faceplate, silver background to the emblem, with three chevrons.
The number of chevrons are as follows, A Mark 25 had two chevrons, a Mark 30 had three chevrons, a Mark 55 (40hp) had four chevrons, a Mark 75 (60hp) had six chevrons.
Hope that helps...
- Scott

Re: Proper emblem for green '57 Merc Mark 30?

It's definately a '57 by serial #, looked it up via Grubs old Mercs site. I too saw that '57s were suppose to all have the black background but was wondering if there were exceptions being that mine (repainted btw) is different. I assume that someone put the wrong emblem on it so I'll then order a black one. It's side decals are also incorrect so I've ordered the correct decals too.
Thanks.

Re: Proper emblem for green '57 Merc Mark 30?

Hi Joakley,
Being that the face plates are often one of the first pieces lost, whether it be from not being fastened properly and lost going down the lake or road, or simply being small enough to be set aside in a cluttered shop and forgotten, it's not uncommon for face plates to be mis-matched.
Also, Mercury didn't make it a habit to toss the previous year's unused parts on January 1st and could very well have "used up" remaining black plaqued face plates on some models, and, conversely, could have run short on others and used some '58 face plates on some '57s to finishup a production run.
It's also conceiveable that somewhere in 1962 Joe Boater and his clutzy teenage kids were water skiining and Junior bashed the face of the motor while handling a ski and checking out the pretty girls in another boat, causing Dad to replace the emblem with whatever the local Merc dealer had onhand.
Ya never know....
- Scott
