is there an acceptable alternative motor oil for a mercruiser 470 (1984) besides mercruiser 25-40, the manual calls for straight 40w, SE or SF which is no longer available, thanks in advance for any help.

billo2,
I found straight 40w at Auto Zone and O'Riellys but I had to ask for it, it was not on the sales floor shelf. I have also used 20w-40w.

If you don't want to use what the manufacturer suggests, then here are a few links to other oil threads to help assist you in choosing your oil.

They all come down to the same thing, people posting something like
"I use ___(Fill in the blank)___ and it works great"
