I have a 1972 40hp #40EL12,on a Monarch 817 Pontoon, 18'. What prop should this motor have? I just bought this boat a couple of months ago and after redecking, new carpet, new wiring, ect. Basicaly rebuilt from frame. I have not put in water yet, will this weekend. I never gave prop much thought until now. But want to get best performance out of boat and motor.
Thanks
Michael

Re: Proper Prop?

Michael,

It really depends on what you do with that boat. If you have you and a fishing pole on board your ideal prop will be totally different from having you and 6 other people on board. Many people make on here have offered good recommendations in the past. What I usually say is to test your boat out with what will be your "normal" load and under normal circumstances. Decide where you want the best performance - some people want a good hole shot and others want a good top speed. Record your RPM's in different circumstances such as speed and under different loads. That will help you choose the right prop. You may even decide that you want 2 props depending on various uses for your boat. I highly recommend a backup prop though even if it is just a cheap aluminum prop.

Thanks bayman, I will normaly have 2-4 people with fishing gear. My idea of boat riding is getting to fishing holes and back, not much on joy riding. I usualy fish a couple of large lakes and the rivers that feed them. Thanks again for input.
Michael

Cool. When you have recorded some tests recorded of what your RPM's are at, at certain speeds, with 2 and 4 people etc... you can just go to anyone that specialized in props (such as iboats) and they can help you get the best performing prop for your circumstances.

Enjoy the fishing!

I don't disagree with Bayman on Data work, but I would highly recommend you post back HERE with your data first before going to the iboat team, just for the fact there are several members here that can make suggestions that may save you some trouble. We still want to buy from iboats, just post the data here for, in my opinion, the "best" recommendation.

Agreed with walleyehed. It's always good to have a wide range of experienced boaters looking at the data.
