Hi all,

I'm new to the boating world and just bought a 1990 Bayliner with a 90 HP Force motor. This is going to sound like a dumb question but I figure you folks could help out the newbie.

When I start the engine, I was told to give it a good 5 seconds of choke and then turn the key. While turning the key and cranking, should I still keep choking it, or give it the first 5 seconds and then turn it over without choking.

I've had it out on the water a couple of times and have done it both ways, but I want to make sure that I'm doing it right and not chancing fouling the plugs.

After the motor is started, it runs like a champ. Any advice here?

On a cold start: Hold the choke in while turning the key (cranking). Release both when it starts.

On a warm start: Choke is not likely needed.

Great. Thanks for the help!

How long would you say would take it to go from warm to cold. Say I shut the motor down and anchor/beach for a few hours, then go to start. Is this just something I'll have to feel out as I become more familiar with my particular motor?

Try to start it briefly without the choke 3 to 5 seconds.
Use the choke as you crank if it refuses to start.

With most all 2 stroke engines, when cold, only as you crank the engine you choke it till it (coughs, spits) trys to start, then release the choke, and it should start right up, and start up any time during that same day without choking, usually. By the way, choking without cranking the engine does nothing.

Remember to also either push the center button or pull out the throttle handle (depending on control box) and advance lever to fast idle for the first start.

Well, I've got the identical year boat and motor combo and this what I do:
As I 'crank it' (cold) I hold the choke on for about 3 seconds while cranking and ba-da-bing it fires. However it does not necessarily immediately start. After that first (3 second) stint...I crank it again without the choke and away she goes...no problems. After that its all press and play time.
Give it a whirl.
