I just bought a boat that sat for many years. The engine was tested and repaired before i bought it. the shop replaced the head gasket and transmission pump. runs great once i get it started.

it is hard to start? what is the correct procedure? i have to turn the primer to the manual position to get it to fire up at the start of each use.

Can i run BG44k fuel addative through the fuel system? is it safe? will it help the starting.

thanks in advance.

Hi,

You need to tell us what outboard you're asking about. There are different starting procedures.

Whenever you post a new thread here, identify the outboard you have a question about. Year, horsepower, model number. That way, folks will be able to give you a reasonable answer.

The starting procedure for a 1950s outboard is very different from one from 1990.

Thanks.

Insure that the fuel primer solenoid is working by pushing the key primer inward. You should detect a 'click' from the solenoid. If not,the solenoid primer is defective or the wiring leading to it is not making. If it does 'click' the initial starting procedure is to insure that the red manual lever of the primer is in the normal 'run' position. All the way clockwise. Then lift the fast idle lever all the way up.Pump the fuel line primer bulb until it is completely firm. Then with the key primer pushed inward turn the key to the start position until the engine fires.Once it starts lower the fast idle lever to maintain rpms of around 1500-2000 until the engine warms a bit and it can be returned to its lowered(run) position. You may need to intermittedly push in on the key primer once the engine fires to maintain it until it settles. It takes practice and feel until you get use to cold starting a two stroke outboard.

Avoid automotive additives in 2-strokes. Many mess with the oil's ability to lubricate.
