Proper stern drive lubricant

Is it OK to put just a good quality 90W gear oil like you put in a cars' rearend in an OMC Cobra outdrive? 1993 5.7L

I'm no oil expert but I do know that your oil in your rear end wasn't ment to be submerged in cold water all day and mantain the correct viscostiy or to mix with water and still lubricate the bearings and gears.Go buy the HI-VIS marine gear oil.<br />You also say it's a Cobra , if you fill those drives wrong you will wipe out the upper gears and bearings .After you have drained the drive install the bottom drain plug and fill it at the vent plug that is about half way up the drive on the starboard side.Fill it slowly till the oil level is at the scribe mark on the dipstick .<br />Good luck.
