Hello all,

I'm a 'new to me' owner of a 2006 Hurricane Sundeck 217. When I did the buyer's check, the tech mentioned that the tachometer was reading high. Come to find out I had a 16" pitch prop and needed more like a 21". Replaced the prop and the boat handles much nicer. However- would like to get some advice as to what I should now be seeing in terms of 'expected' or 'proper' tach readings at certain throttle settings. I'm a 260 HP 8 cyl. My tach was put on a 'shop tach' and checks out. Right now at idle, I'm at about 1,000 rpm. Just on plane, and around 15-20mph, I'm at about 3,000 rpm. Wide open, I'm at about 4,500-5000...not in the redline as I recall.

Engine sounds good..no sounds of 'laboring' or anything. Am I in the ballpark on this, and what should I expect in terms of rpms at different throttle settings?

The only RPMs the matter are idle and WOT. Your WOT seems good. Your idle is high. It should be 650-700 RPM at idle. Everything in between idle and WOT will just depend on the hull and weight for what speed you will be at.

Prop has no bearing on tach reading, to large pitch rpm lower, to low a pitch rpm higher. As mentioned idle and WOT are the only ones which mostly matter. Since your tach is off your 1000 rpm may be off as well. A 5.0L WOT should be between 4600 and 5000, so your in good shape
