Properly measuring steering cable

The topic really asks the major question. I have a "Rack and Pinion" cable that needs replacing. Do you measure the entire cable, or from the nut to the end or middle of the rack??? Thanx for the input , Mark.

i think the smart think to do would be to call your cable maker and ask how they measure<br /><br />tommays

You remove the cable and look at the numbers on the cable. All cables are marked.<br /><br />If no numbers are seen - just take cable to ships store, they will match cable.

2nd post<br />Often if cable is bad, steering head ( gear box) is also stripped. <br />Check it out. Head and cable kit are about $140. for a 24' IO. <br /><br />Always say what year-outdrive-engine you have<br />when posting. List all boat information.

goleft,I did this a few weeks ago,and I think you measure plastic to plastic,and add 30" and round up to next foot,if you change to rotary steering.These kits cost less than relacing your rack cable.<br />DHP
