I am currently using a 14 inch 19 pitch prop on my 185 Sea Ray bowrider with a 4.3 V-6 Mercruiser. What is the most common/best prop for this engine? I'm in Minneapolis. Does anyone have any advice on where to shop for used props?<br /><br />Thank you,<br /><br />Erp

Re: Props

You will find the best prices at Boatfix.com. I bought a brand new one for the price of an e-bay used prop for my Sea Ray.<br /><br />The answer to your question, needs more info. What is your WOT with your current prop. What do you normally do in your boat, ski, tube, cruise?? come back with these details and we can help..

Re: Props

What is WOT? I usually cruise and sometime ski. I understand the lower the pitch the more hole shot I will get and the higher the pitch the more top end I will get. I have had the best luck with my 14 inch 19 pitch prop. I received a 13 1/2 inch 21 pitch prop that performed poorly, and I don't know if it's because it is 13 1/2 inches or because it is 21 pitch or both. So, I'm just trying to get info on the best all around prop for my boat.

ERP,<br /><br />WOT means "wide open throttle". Your engine has a specific rpm range that WOT should fall into.<br /><br />If your WOT rpm is below that range, you are lugging the engine. Sort of like driving around in high gear all the time.<br /><br />If your engine exceeds the rpm range at WOT, you risk engine damage due to over revving.<br /><br />The right prop is the one that allows you to reach your WOT operating range, with an average load, without exceeding it. <br /><br />I believe, your WOT max. rpm is 4600 rpm.

Re: Props

4600 rpm sounds about right. My top end with the 14inch 19 pitch is around 48 mph and if I remember right the rpms were around 4600. What prop do you recommend for peak performance?

Erp,<br /><br />You've got the right prop. now. You can pitch down for a better holeshot, but you had better keep a sharp eye on the tach. to prevent over rev.<br /><br />I would not go any pitch up. You already proved that to yourself with the 21"<br /><br />Typically, one inch in prop. pitch equals 200 rpm. Both up and down.
