Hey Guy's
I just bought a new Garmin 541s GPS/Fishfinder and waited to buy the Transducer until I talked to you.
What are your thoughts on Transom mount or Thru hull Transducers?
Let know your thoughts Please.

Thanks

Transom mount for me. How effective a shoot through hull transducer is depends on the construction of your boat. Transducers cannot shoot through air so if your boat is of sandwich construction, what's in between or what's not in between layers will affect how it works.

I didn't know they made one that shoots through the hull? I was talking about the one that you drill through the hull and attach to bottom of your boat, it also is D/S/T like the Transom.
Don't feel to comfortable drilling a hole in the bottom of my boat, but want the most accurate readings I can get.
Let me know and Thanks

Call several dealers of your boat make & ask them if you can mount it INSIDE the hull. You can not be sure every dealer knows the right answer.

Then you would mount it ONLY STRAIGHT up & down on the inside of your hull Use a VERTICAL level. Where it goes depends how clear a shot the beam has, as it goes down & gets wider every foot.

I use my depth & fish finders while off plane. That provides a lot of area to either side of a drive shaft for good pinging & echos back.

I use a small handheld GPS for all speed checks of anything that moves. FAR MORE ACCURATE than those little impeller wheels being splashed & the sensitive bearings starting to drag . A bad sling lift or trailer will ruin them easily. also hitting floating junk is death on them. Some take a whack pretty good.

It goes on the transom ...must be on the starbard side near enough to the center to be in the water on the plane but not too near the prop.....

Shoot through is good if the hull material is suitable ....use 24 hr set epoxy not 5 min stuff

Shoot thru and thru hull are to totally different things. Thru hull transducer will give you the best reading usually. I don't trust shoot thru transducers, though many mount them that way.

There is nothing wrong with a thru-hull transducer if properly installed. Everyone is afraid to drill a hole in there boat but if properly installed you have nothing to worry about.

The best readings are going to depend on what type unit you have and what type transducer you buy. Is it a 1kw?

+1
I vote thru-hull. Best read back and far less likelihood of damage from underwater gremlins than a transom mount. If it is installed properly, water intrusion should be a non-issue. If you are too nervous to perform the work yourself, have a competent dealer/marina do it, and ask for a written warranty covering their labor.

Thru hull here as well. I have nine holes in the boat, seven of which are at or below the water line. The 4" diameter hole in the bottom of the boat that holds the transducer is the least of my worries.

I have succcessfully mounted the transom type inside the hull as a shoot through but you need to grind away some of the thickness of the glass fibre and make sure you have no air bubbles in the epoxy
