Protect Outdrive

Last year when I put my boat in the water the outdrive paint was nice and shiny. It?s a new outdrive. When I took it out of the water it had a lot of algae on it. I keep my boat in Greenwood Lake, NY. I never had this problem before, even when I kept the boat in salt water. Is there any type of anti fouling stuff I can spray on the outdrive to protect it? What type of cleaner can I use on the outdrive to remove the existing algae?

Thanks,

Tom

Re: Protect Outdrive

I'm no botanist (HA!) but I would find a paint specific for that. We used to use something for the bottom of our sailboat to keep the zebra mussles off. Nasty stuff, brownish in color, but kept everything off that hull. Can't remember the name of it, but will repost when I do.

Re: Protect Outdrive

The wrong paint could react with the metal outdrive, alter the metal chemically and turn it into rusted/corroded junk (and you WILL NOT be able to reverse the issue).

Head over to the I/O section and inquire there. Cleaning and painting with the right paint is the only answer. Sometimes, cleaning during the time it is wet slipped is the only answer.

Yes, there is outdrive specific anti-fouling paint. Probably for sale, right here on iboats.com

My initial reaction to cleaning it off would be to use the same acid based cleaner that you used to clean the hull. That's what I used on mine.
