Is there any thing i can do to help keep the damage to a minimum on my boat. Its not the best looking one but it is mine and i have never had a boat that i could call my own. Would putting a tarp on it atleast help keep the windshield from getting damages and the seat and floors in better shape? I cant move it in out of the weather unfortuanly i have only outside parking at my apartments.

Re: Protection

Ok i thought perhaps there was more that i needed to do. I had a cover from the original owner but it was ripped in the corners where the glass is. He said he had gotten one of the 200+ dollar ones and it still ripped so i was thinking a good heavy tarp and some bungees to secure it. Atleast until i can save up and get one of the nice thick ones. Money being a issue and all like everyone else. I already have a extra tarp that has gone through hell with me and is still in tact so i assume it should be able to hold up in oklahoma on a boat. Sitting in the drive. Again thanks.

+ 1 - What He said^^^^

+2 - what they said ^^^^^^^^^^^^ a few hundred for a good cover saves thousands in upholstery and interior trim replacement.

Just use it for when stored, not while driving (unless it's fitted and meant for travel).

Good Luck!

Re: Protection

My boat is outside 24/7 and has lived under a 20' x 30" heavy duty trap ($85) for the past 6 years. I use tarp clips to "form" the tarp to the contours and hold everything down with bungie cords. It fits better than any cover I've seen on this boat with the exception of the custom covers you can get made. $1,400 for a cover verse $90 for heavy duty clips and a hand full of traps covers is a no brainer.

Re: Protection

of course it depends on the boat and the location. Many boats don't need to be covered, or don't need to be covered completely.

You have to specify: what am I trying to keep out? Why? How fragile is my boat?
A boat on a trailer under trees may need it, but not the same boat in a slip (if it is a weatherproof boat). Your windshield should not be "damaged" by just sitting there uncovered, BTW.

Sometimes, by covering, you trap moisture inside and, depending on the boat, that is worse than letting it dry out. For that reason, a lot of people cover a boat in the winter but not in the summer.

There is also the question of the degree of protection. Clearly, a car that is always parked in a garage will look nicer than one that is not. Is it worth it? Do you buy a cover, or build a garage, for a 15 year old Ford Taurus?

As for the windshield, I had the problem of sharp corners wearing out the cover, so I marked it, took the cover to an awning shop, and had them sew in reinforcement where it hit the windshield. Not only did it potect it, but it made it easier to put on b/c you knew what went where. Or you could put that foam pipe insulation tubes on your windshield.

But there is one rule for all boats: take out the plug! No matter how well you cover it, water will get in.

Re: Protection

The covers no matter how tight will move in the wind and rub against the gel coat. A 10' X 20' good quality tent at COSTCO will cost you $200 and last for years. Like others stated, how much protection are you looking for?

Re: Protection

I keep mine covered by a tarp and bungees, BUT that is after I store it in the barn.

Re: Protection

Well it is a older boat and motor combo. I was just looking for something to help protect the main things like windshield and any other things that may get hurt in a heavy storm. I live in oklahoma and as for weather it was sunny and shinning this morning and out of no where it has been storming all afternoon. Pretty heavy and they were talking about hail also. I know not much will stop that but help protect from damage would be nice. I dont have any desire to tow with it just help protect from minor damage. Thanks

Re: Protection

I've used Wally World (Walmart) $20.00 tarps. They last 2 years. The hardest part is framework so water doesn't collect in it. I just use ropes tied to trailer. We had a hurricane in Ohio (No kidding) with 75 mile per hour winds for 6 hours & no problems with the cover. Couldn't see spending much more to cover a boat I paid $300.00 for.

Re: Protection

iBoats has a very good covers at ridiculous prices, if you can wait for the sale. Seems to happen about once a year. I got a very heavy cover with a "semi" custom fit for about $130 (can't remember exactly), two winters later its a bit faded but still in excellent condition. normal price for the cover was like 350. it is trailerable but i prefer to trailer without it, if it breaks loose I figure it can do more damage by flapping around.

Yea i will most likely just use the tarp i have currentlly and then wait on the sale thanks for all the suggestions. Great site i live on here soaking in as much information as i can, we have been very very slow at work lately. Thank you gas prices no body wants to have repairs done when they need that money to put gas in the car to get to work.

Re: Protection

as we eek out a little more info---I doubt a tarp helps with hail, you need a roof. As for rain--some boats are made to take it and some aren't. Which kind do you have? Mine love rain, the harder the better. If it's an old boat already sun faded, why bother?
so, just what kind of damage (besides hail) are you concerned about?

Re: Protection

Yea sorry i dont always get all my thoughts out so well , it is my curse. Lol anyways the biggest one i had was hail hitting the windshield and spider veining the thing didnt know if a tarp would help absorb some of the impact, all my dads boat up to the very last one he owned prior to passing did not have a windshield. Also i dont really remember how he covered them or not since it was about 7 years ago that he passed and alot has happened, i can remember most everything else we did but how to take care of boats.

Re: Protection

I would add, keep it clean (wash after each use, esp. in salt water) and waxed.
