Protective coating for anchor

Not to protect the anchor of course, but to protect the boat.
I received a galvanized anchor as a gift and rather than return it, I'd like to explore the possibility of coating it so that when I place it in the bow storage area of the boat, its less likely to scratch and mar the fiberglass. The anchor is a #10 danforth anchor, so its not too terribly large.

I'm thinking of plasti Dip as seen here http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip or another type of vinyl coating. The anchor will likely never be submerged more than a few hours at a time.

I was also thinking about automotive undercoating spray seen here - http://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-s-rubberized-undercoating.html?srccode=ga110020

Anyone ever done something like this?

Why not pad the anchor locker? You could use carpet, foam sheets, rubber sheets, etc. I doub't the plastic dip will stick well to the galvanized anchor.

That's a good idea. I would still be a little concerned about bumps and scrapes when actually pulling up the anchor, but that's minimal. I am concerned as well about the longevity of the plastic dip- especially if it gets a cut, the water penetrates it, then is likely game over for the rest of the coating...

If you're using it in salt water, forget it. Chris hit it on the padding.

I am going to mod my anchor locker to have more strips of starboard or similar material as a cushion (it currently has some). I've seen someone use Trek type decking cut in strips, too.

No reason to coat the anchor. I think that'd be a mess.

Plasti-dip is great stuff, but the spray type removes very easily from its substrate once you get a little leading edge to peel from... I would think that would make it unsuitable for something that's going to see a lot of abrasion like an anchor.

If you're dead set on a coated anchor, I would just buy one, and use the anchor you got as a gift as a backup. I paid only something like $25 for my 8# greenfield coated anchor.

Is the OP aware that there are clips made to have an anchor snap into place in an anchor locker?

You add just a few small strips of a material as a cushion; you add some clips and/or a tiny bungee, and call it a day.

Look at the clips. They are set into something like small pieces of starboard or other plastic-type material.

take the boat to a spray in bed liner place. have them line the anchor locker. if bed liner can with stand a blast ( http://www.linexoffranklin.net/military.asp ) it can withstand years of anchor abuse. just make sure they dont plug the locker drain.

if you were storing on-deck, I would recommend a set of anchor chocks http://www.iboats.com/Anchor-Chocks/dm/view_id.239846

the issue with using undercoating, is it is more tar-like, and less rubber like. you could use body-chutes, however the bed liner route will be cheaper.

Re: Protective coating for anchor

I think the OP is more concerned with protecting the finish on the bow, then he is with protecting the inside of the anchor locker. A coated anchor like spoilsofwar suggested might help. Another option is to mount an anchor roller on the bow. It's more work (and might not work at all depending on how your bow is shaped), but the anchor would never even come aboard- it'd be permanently 'stored' outside the boat.

Re: Protective coating for anchor

Thanks for all the tips guys. My main concern was indeed protecting the boat from just general handling of the anchor when throwing it out and bringing it back in, but fortunately my boat does have an enclosed area for the anchor where the anchor can clip in so that should protect the interior fiberglass most of the time. The chain I have is coated as well and so I was just exploring ideas for a do it yourself coating for the anchor. Sounds like the plastic dip won't cut it but the bedliner stuff should - good idea. I think I have some herculiner left over which may work.
A new anchor or an anchor roller are other great ideas which I'll look into as well.
Thanks all!!!
